Repaint Time!

We all knew how important it was to get Danny out of his “butterfly” livery and to look more professional and grown up! But having a double deck bus painted is not cheap! Our chairman Steve buys and sells buses at his day job at Chartwell Bus Sales. Steve has regularly used Mardens Commercials of Benfleet to paint buses that have been sold,  So Steve met with Jim McKinnon the MD at Mardens and told Jim all about the charity and our plans for the bus. Jim was very impressed with our plans for Danny and very kindly agreed to paint the bus for us,without charge!  Heartfelt thanks  to Jim and all the Mardens team. Here are some photos of Danny in prep at Mardens during October 2017

The History of Danny:

Danny is an MCW Metrobus this model was built in Birmingham between 1979 and 1989 during this period over 4,000 buses were built. Our bus B178 WUL was one of 1440 purchased by London Transport between 1978 and 1985 it was given fleet number M1178 and joined LT in February 1985. During Dannys 17 years in London he worked from, Edgeware, Turnham Green, Norbiton and Fulwell garages, taking thousands of Londoners to work, school, shopping etc. He was withdrawn from service in 2002 and converted into a “Youth Cafe Bus” for The Richmond Youth Project. The project ended in 2012 and Danny was in dry storage at Fulwell bus garage until purchased by The Danny Gallivan Trust in March 2017. Here are some photos from his time working for London Transport.

The Master Plan!

The plan for the interior is to have a small galley kitchen downstairs, where we can provide hot drinks and food for the homeless folk. The rest of the lower deck will have a large table where folk can eat and chat or watch TV. On the top deck there will be individual sleep “pods” with a self contained area for the ladies. The idea is that homeless folk can get out of the rain and cold, a have a good nights sleep in an safe environment.

Danny’s Interior Before Refurbishment

As you can see we have a lot of work to do to the interior to make it work for our charity!

Top deck front to back, this area will be the main dormitory.

Top deck back to front, the plan is to get 12 bunks in here.

Separate room top deck front. We hope to get four bunks in here for the ladies.

Lower deck back to front, this will be the kitchen.

Lower deck front to back, this will be the dinning area.
